With size 10 crochet thread and a 2.00 mm hook, shell measures about 1 ½ inches wide.
With size 3 crochet thread and a 3.25 mm hook, shell measures just over 2 inches wide.
With worsted weight cotton yarn, you've got a nice little face scrubby about 3 inches across.
A contrasting edging may be added for further interest if desired.
The technique used to create the unusual-looking stitches is called by various names. In the pattern, I have chosen to stick with the term 'linked stitch', such as ldc (linked double crochet).
Don't be afraid to try it- This tiny project is a great introduction and confidence booster!
Each time you make a yarn over when creating a stitch taller than a single crochet, a horizontal bar is created. This is what those horizontal bars look like when viewing the front of your work:
This linked method is actually a variation of Tunisian crochet, with the end of the 'forward pass' joined to another spot on the item before making the 'return pass'.
Below are written instructions for these stitches:
Ldc- Linked double crochet- insert hook through horizontal bar of previous st, yo, pull up lp, insert hook into place where base of stitch is to be worked, yo, pull up lp (3 lps on hook), (yo, draw through 2 lps on hook) twice.
Ltr- Linked treble crochet- insert hook into upper horizontal bar of previous st, yo, pull up lp, insert hook into lower horizontal bar, yo, pull up lp, insert hook into place where base of stitch is to be worked, yo, pull up lp (4 lps on hook), (yo, draw through 2 lps on hook) 3 times.
Ldtr- Linked double treble- insert hook into upper horizontal bar of previous st, yo, pull up lp, insert hook into center horizontal bar, yo, pull up lp, insert hook into lower horizontal bar, yo, pull up lp, insert hook into place where base of stitch is to be worked, yo, pull up lp (5 lps on hook), (yo, draw through 2 lps on hook) 4 times.
